Former Arizona state representative Daniel Hernandez Jr. has announced his candidacy for the U.S. House seat in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, following the passing of longtime Representative Raúl Grijalva. The district is Arizona’s 2nd most Democrat-leaning district (after the 3rd Congressional district.) Hernandez, known for his legislative work, proud Zionism, and progressive advocacy, aims to continue serving the southern Arizona community at the federal level. He is the brother of current State Representatives Alma Hernandez and Consuelo Hernandez, two Democrats noted for their moderate political views and collaborations with Republicans.

Hernandez’s political career includes serving in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023, where he focused on healthcare, education, and LGBTQ+ rights. His experience and dedication to public service have earned him recognition and support within the Democratic Party, even among the progressive crowd who is typically at odds with Daniel’s siblings.

The special election to fill the vacant seat is scheduled for September 23, 2025, with a Democratic primary on July 15. Hernandez will face Adelita Grijalva, the late congressman’s daughter, in the primary. The district encompasses parts of Tucson and southern Arizona. Daniel’s campaign emphasizes a commitment to progressive values and addressing the needs of the diverse constituents in the district.

As the race unfolds, Hernandez’s experience and policy priorities position him as a notable contender in the upcoming election. Voters in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District will have the opportunity to choose a representative who aligns with their vision for the community’s future – whether that be Daniel, Adelita, or a dark horse candidate.
