Arizona State opens its 2026 football season with a home date against Morgan State that also functions as a straightforward financial transaction: the visiting FCS program is slated to receive a $600,000 payout, according to Cronkite News reporting republished by the Arizona Daily Independent.
The matchup is engineered to be lopsided on paper. Morgan State is 0-23 all time against FBS opponents, Cronkite News reported. For ASU, the expected outcome is a clean win and live reps for a retooled roster. For Morgan State, the consequence is national exposure and a check to its athletic department. That is the cost-and-outcome calculus of a guarantee game.
Morgan State coach Damon Wilson framed the trip as more than a ledger entry, telling Cronkite News the cross-country swing is a chance for the Bears to "grow together" and acclimate before kickoff in Tempe. The Bears flew out Thursday to settle into the environment, he said.
The journey is significant. Morgan State, based on the north side of Baltimore, is traveling nearly 2,300 miles to face a Power Four program, a longer haul than the school has made in a decade, Cronkite News reported. The Bears' most recent game against a Power Four opponent was a 65-0 loss to Rutgers in 2017.
The program's record against FBS foes masks a deep history. Competing in the MEAC, Morgan State has claimed conference titles in 1971, 1976, 1979 and 2014, along with seven Black College National Championships and 19 CIAA championships, per the report. Four Pro Football Hall of Famers, Rosey Brown, Len Ford, Leroy Kelly and Willie Lanier, came through the program.
There is Arizona familiarity as well. The Bears' last NFL draft pick, offensive tackle Joshua Miles, went to the Arizona Cardinals in 2019, Cronkite News noted. The school also counts prominent alumni in the arts, including Mo'Nique, Deniece Williams and LaChanze.
Morgan State arrives with early momentum after a 17-7 win on Aug. 29 against North Carolina A&T. Redshirt senior running back Jordan Barnett posted 114 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown, while senior quarterback Cameron Edge completed 68 percent of his passes for 167 yards with a touchdown to redshirt junior Joseph Towler, according to the report.
There are new faces in key roles. Last year's MEAC Rookie of the Year, quarterback Raymond Moore III, transferred to UTEP, creating the opening for Edge, who previously spent time at Maryland and Eastern Michigan, Cronkite News reported. Barnett joined after a 1,209-yard, 17-touchdown season at Shepherd, while returning back Randall Nauden led the Bears in rushing as a redshirt freshman in 2025.
Wilson acknowledged the challenge and set a narrow standard for success: do everything right in a hostile setting and leave with a victory if execution holds, per Cronkite News. Beyond the field, the visit brings HBCU pageantry to Tempe, with Morgan State's Magnificent Marching Machine offering a cultural crossover alongside ASU's student section.
